Sunset at an eighth-century palace costs ₹539 with dinner. Five detours off the Bali ticket you already booked.

BMKG, Indonesia's weather agency, said on 22 September that a very strong El Niño is pushing the 2026/27 rainy season back across 529 climate zones, about 61 per cent of the country. Rain reaches most of Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara in December rather than November. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November. For once that is a dry fortnight almost everywhere you would want to go.

Most Indians do one thing with Indonesia. Fly to Denpasar, stay between Seminyak and Uluwatu, fly home. The flight is the expensive part and you have already paid for it. Here are five clusters you can reach off that ticket, ordered by how long the detour takes. Rupee figures use Rp 186 to the rupee.

The paperwork is cheaper than the internet thinks

Visa on arrival for an Indian passport is Rp 500,000, about ₹2,690, for 30 days, extendable once for the same again. Immigration said in August it wants to double that, but no effective date has been published and the portal still shows the old price. Apply online before you fly and you are insulated if it moves while you are in the air.

The All Indonesia arrival card is separate and free. Mandatory since 1 October 2025, submitted within 72 hours of landing, and the only real site is allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id. Third party sites charge for a free service, and without the card you cannot use the e-gates.

Bali's tourist levy of Rp 150,000, around ₹805, is per visit per person, infants included, and it applies in Bali and nowhere else. Nusa Penida charges its own Rp 25,000 at Banjar Nyuh. One last thing to settle before you land: Indonesia has no vegetarian marking system, shrimp paste goes into sambal and into gado-gado dressing, and chicken stock turns up in things that look meatless. Two phrases do most of the work, saya vegetarian and tanpa terasi.

₹4,343₹3,619

You can do Nusa Penida for less than ₹3,619. A boat ticket, a scooter and your own navigation will come in under it. What this removes is counting out cash at four windows: boat both ways, island retribution, the fee at each viewpoint, and a driver who knows which road is still broken. Take the West Penida version if it is your only day, the snorkelling version if you have been before.

Forty minutes off Sanur

Sanur harbour runs thirteen operators and up to twenty sailings a day. Penida is 35 to 45 minutes, Lembongan 30 to 40. The Badung Strait between them does not behave the way you expect. The dry season brings the stronger winds, so afternoons are choppier from May to October. Take the earliest boat out and an early afternoon boat back.

The warning is not hypothetical. In August 2025 a fast boat coming in from Penida was struck by a wave while berthing at Sanur and capsized with 80 aboard. Two died and the port shut. Operators asked for new safety rules and I could not find any that were enacted. Every passenger should have a life jacket, and the back of the boat moves least.

The 7am sailing. If the crew is loading bags onto the roof and nobody has handed you a life jacket, ask before you board.
The 7am sailing. If the crew is loading bags onto the roof and nobody has handed you a life jacket, ask before you board.

Penida is also where everybody goes. Kelingking has rope guides and rangers now, and the loop road is roughly 70 per cent asphalt, up from 40 per cent three years ago, but the viewpoint at midday is a queue. Arrive by 08:30 or after 15:00. Lembongan is the island nobody writes about and it is a third the hassle.

Three ways to spend a day on the water, in descending order of commitment. Lembongan Island Explore at ₹1,830 is what I would book with parents or small children: the island is flat near the coast and has no cliff staircases. The Penida snorkelling run at ₹1,107 covers four spots including Manta Bay, and it beats the full island tour if you already swim in open water. Tanjung Benoa at ₹478 is for anyone the strait has put off entirely, a sheltered bay twenty minutes from the airport.

North, for dolphins you may decide you did not want

Lovina is on the Bali Sea on the opposite coast and the boats leave before dawn. This is the one booking here I will argue against as readily as for. The outriggers find a pod, then a dozen of them converge on it with engines running, and some people find that unpleasant enough to spoil the morning.

What ₹659 buys is a sunrise on a jukung on a sea most visitors to Bali never see, with dolphins a possibility rather than a promise. It only works if you sleep on the north coast the night before, which is the real cost. Treat it as the reason to spend a night in Lovina, not as a day trip.

Fifty-five minutes east, to Lombok

Wings Air and TransNusa run eleven to thirteen flights a day from Denpasar, 55 minutes, fares from around US$40. The fast boat from Padangbai to Senggigi is 1.5 to 3 hours from about Rp 200,000. The slow public ferry to Lembar is Rp 50,000 to 75,000 and four to five hours, and it is the more reliable one once the rain starts.

Check the calendar first. MotoGP is at the Mandalika circuit from 9 to 11 October, rooms near the track went months ago and the south coast roads are congested all weekend.

Pink Beach, Pantai Tangsi, sits at the southern tip of the Ekas peninsula. It is 55 km from Kuta Lombok, which sounds like an hour and is two and a half, because the last ten to fifteen kilometres are broken concrete and dirt. Entry is Rp 50,000 for foreigners, cash, and the sand only reads pink early in the morning or from about half past three.

₹4,824₹4,019

The argument for the ₹4,019 boat trip is the road you do not drive. Pickup at 8am from Kuta Mandalika or Senggigi, 90 minutes to Tanjung Luar harbour, then the coast by sea: Gili Pasir, Segui Beach, snorkelling at Gili Petelu, lunch on Pink Beach itself. Book it if you want Pink Beach at all, and skip it if you get seasick, because it is a long day on a small boat.

Lombok is Muslim majority, so mainstream food is halal and pork is rare and clearly marked, which suits some Indian groups better than Bali does. There is no reliable Indian restaurant on the island, and Ashtari in Kuta and Puri Mas in Senggigi are the usual vegetarian fallbacks.

Ratu Boko at four in the afternoon. Arrive by then: the gates face west and the light goes quickly once it drops behind the plain.

One hour fifty to the temples

Garuda and Super Air Jet fly Denpasar to Yogyakarta four times a day, 1 hour 50. From Jakarta it is eighteen flights a day, or the Taksaka out of Gambir in about six hours, executive class Rp 355,000 to Rp 620,000, which is ₹1,910 to ₹3,335 for more legroom than the plane.

Prambanan is why this leg reads differently to an Indian traveller than to anyone else. It is a ninth century Hindu complex, Shiva at the centre with Vishnu and Brahma beside him, and the Ramayana is staged there as a ballet. Ratu Boko, three kilometres away, is a Mataram palace rather than a temple: stone gates, bathing pools and a hilltop looking west to Merapi.

Then the number nobody warns you about. Foreign admission is roughly Rp 455,000 to climb Borobudur, Rp 400,000 at Prambanan and about Rp 275,000 at Ratu Boko. Close to ₹6,000 a head before you have paid for a car.

The Indonesian ticket at Prambanan is Rp 50,000. The foreign one is Rp 400,000. Nobody mentions the eight times multiplier until you are at the window.

Borobudur has also changed how it sells access. Grounds and structure are two tickets. Climbing needs a licensed guide, a timed slot and the woven Upanat sandals issued at the gate, the daily cap is reported at 1,200 climbers, and the structure is closed on Mondays. Sunrise is a separate product again, capped at 100 people a day, starting between 4.30 and 5am.

Borobudur is 40 km from Yogyakarta, about an hour and a quarter. A Grab runs around Rp 230,000, the DAMRI shuttle from Malioboro Rp 20,000, a car and driver for eight hours about Rp 600,000. Merapi is at alert level 3 of 4 on the Smithsonian's report for 24 to 30 September, with lava dome avalanches running 2.5 km down the flanks, so check it before anyone sells you a jeep tour.

Borobudur Sunrise at ₹2,871 covers the ticket, breakfast at Manohara and the Cultural Centre, and it is the only one here that needs you awake at four. Borobudur Sunset at ₹2,879 costs the same and asks nothing of your morning, which is the honest recommendation for most people. Boko Sunset at ₹539 is the best value by a distance: entrance plus fried rice or noodles and tea, against a reported walk-up foreign price of about Rp 275,000 for the ticket alone. Check which rate you are buying. Boko Picnic at ₹880 is the same hill in daylight, which is the wrong time to be on it.

Yogyakarta's Indian food is thin. Ganesha Ek Sanskriti on Jl. Laksda Adisucipto is the dependable one, and reviewers report the kitchen will cook without onion and garlic if you ask. Otherwise try Prawirotaman for vegetarian cafes.

Jakarta, the city you only ever change planes in

There is one nonstop from India: IndiGo 6E1601 out of Mumbai at 06:35, into Soekarno-Hatta at 14:50, daily. Nothing from Delhi. That single route is why Jakarta is a stopover for Indians rather than a destination.

Two warnings. Anak Krakatau, in the Sunda Strait, erupted on 4 September and closed eight airports including both of Jakarta's. Soekarno-Hatta shut for two days, and nearly 3,000 flights and 340,000 travellers were disrupted before it reopened on 8 September. It is back to alert level 2 of 4 and it threatens Jakarta's air links, not Bali's. Separately, the protests running since 2025 flared again in late August, with busway blockades and more than 300 detained. Bali has seen none of it.

Ancol is 552 hectares of waterfront in the north of the city and almost unwritten about outside Indonesia, which is odd, because it is the most practical thing to do with a Jakarta stopover and children. The catch is structural: you pay to get in, then you pay again for everything inside.

A Grab from the centre is about fourteen minutes off peak, or TransJakarta under an hour for the price of a cup of tea, and traffic can triple the first number without warning.

Then pick one, because buying all four is how a family of four spends ₹8,000 before lunch. Dunia Fantasi at ₹900 is the theme park, forty rides, 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and to 19:00 at weekends, and the only one worth a full day. Sea World at ₹265 is the oceanarium with the Antasena tunnel, and the right answer in heavy rain. Atlantis Water Adventures at ₹426 is five hectares of wave pools, familiar enough to an Indian family to skip. Ocean Dream Samudra at ₹159 runs dolphin and sea lion shows, so book it or not depending on how you feel about performing marine mammals.

Eat in Pasar Baru, Jakarta's Little India for decades. Gokul, on the fourth floor of the Wijaya Musik building, has been pure vegetarian since 2009, though the coverage of it is old enough that you should ring before crossing the city.

None of this replaces Bali, and with six nights you should not attempt more than one of them. They are not interchangeable either. The Nusas are a day, Lombok is three, Yogyakarta is two nights and a domestic flight, and Jakarta is whatever your layover already gave you.

The reason to do it this year rather than next is the line at the top. The rain is late and the dry window runs past Diwali, and in a normal year it would not. By the Christmas break, on BMKG's own forecast, most of Java, Bali and Lombok will be wet.

Weather from BMKG's release of 22 September 2026, volcano alert levels from the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program report for 24 to 30 September. Visa rules from the Indonesian immigration portal and Indonesia Expat. Temple prices and access rules from InJourney Destination Management and from Borobudur and Prambanan ticketing guides updated between January and September 2026, where the grounds-only price and the climbing quota are reported inconsistently. Ancol prices from Indonesian consumer reporting of 19 March and 2 October. Boat times and the August 2025 Sanur capsizing from Bali Ferries, Penida Getaway, Bali Discovery and The Jakarta Post. Flights from FlightsFrom and AeroRoutes, all read on 3 October 2026. Prices move, so check yours on the day.
