Montserrat means serrated mountain, and from a distance the name explains itself — the ridge looks like it was cut with pinking shears. The Benedictine monastery on it has been there since the eleventh century and holds La Moreneta, the black Madonna that is Catalonia's patron saint; the queue to see her moves slowly and is worth joining anyway. The boys' choir, the Escolania, is one of the oldest in Europe and sings most weekday afternoons, though not in July. Getting there is half of it: the rack railway and the cable car both climb from the valley, and the cable car is the shorter, steeper, better one if heights do not bother you.
