Park Güell started as a failed property development. Eusebi Güell wanted a gated estate of sixty houses on Carmel Hill; two sold, the project collapsed, and Barcelona ended up with a park instead. The famous part — the mosaic bench, the terrace, the dragon on the steps — is the Monumental Zone and needs a timed ticket. The rest of the park is free and much emptier, and the views over the city from the upper paths are better than the ones everybody queues for. It is a genuine hill, so wear something you can climb in, and the terrace faces south-west, which makes late afternoon the good light and the middle of the day the hot one.
