The Prado holds the Spanish royal collection, which means it is deep rather than broad: extraordinary on Velázquez, Goya and Bosch, thin on almost everything outside Europe. Las Meninas has its own room and its own crowd. The Goya to see is not the famous one but the Black Paintings, fourteen murals he put on the walls of his own house in his seventies and never meant anyone to see. Two hours is enough for the highlights and nowhere near enough for the building. Entry is free in the last two hours of the day, which is worth knowing and also worth avoiding if you dislike queues.
