Bali's rains are a month late this year. Fifteen bookings, sorted by what time you have to be up.

Sunrise in Bali on 31 October is at 5.49am. Sunset is at 6.15pm. Between them the island hands you twelve and a half hours of daylight, and about five of those are worth booking anything into.

That is the real constraint on a Bali holiday and almost nothing written about the island admits it. Heat peaks in the early afternoon, the roads seize between five and seven, and the things people fly eight hours to do here are pinned to clock times that do not move for you. The Kecak starts at six. The Batur pickup is twenty to two in the morning. The last boat to Nusa Penida leaves Sanur at one. Plan Bali by place and you will miss half of them.

This year there is a specific reason to care. The Bali Climatology Station published its seasonal outlook on 29 September, and the rains are late. Three of the island's twenty seasonal zones enter the rainy season in November: Banjar, Sukasada and Baturiti, all upland. The other seventeen wait for December, seven in ten running a month or more behind the 1991 to 2020 baseline, with the peak now forecast for February. Denpasar usually takes 117mm over eleven wet days in November against 56mm over six in October, and most of the island should sit nearer the October figure. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, so the week Indian families can get away lands inside a dry spell that normally is not there. A forecast is a probability, not a promise, and the zones that do turn wet in November are the uplands, which is where the volcano is.

1.40 in the morning: the only alarm worth setting

Mount Batur is a 1,717m walk up loose volcanic gravel in the dark, and the schedule is the hard part. Pickup from Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu or Legian is around 1.40am, from Ubud around 2.30am. Trailhead by 3.45, summit by about 6.15, down at seven, hotel by half past ten.

Two warnings matter more than the climb. The summit sits at 10 to 15 degrees before the sun clears the rim, and nobody packs a fleece for Bali. And it is the descent on loose scree that hurts, which is why people who were fine at the top limp for two days.

The guided trek at ₹632 is close to absurd for a pre-dawn summit with a local guide, and it is the one I would book. The jeep at ₹2,105 costs three times as much and is the better buy for anyone travelling with parents, with knees that have opinions, or with a child under ten, because it reaches a rim viewpoint without the gravel. The jeep is not a downgrade. It is the version most families should have booked anyway.

Six o'clock: the hour the island belongs to other people

The Lovina boats leave the north coast at around six to look for dolphins, and this is the one booking here I want to talk you out of before I sell it to you. Dozens of outrigger boats converge on the same pods with engines running and follow them, juveniles included. Travellers on the TripAdvisor forum for the beach have called it dolphin chasing rather than dolphin watching for years, and a fair number ask to be taken back in early.

₹4,976₹662

At ₹662 this is the cheapest sunrise we sell in Bali, and if you are already on the north coast it is worth considering as a boat ride at first light rather than as wildlife. Ask how far the operator keeps off a pod. If the answer is vague, take the sunrise from the sand, which costs nothing. I would not build a day around this, or take children expecting a nature documentary.

Half past seven: the Sanur pier, and the day that goes wrong most often

Nusa Penida boats run from Sanur Harbour from 7.30 until about one, most day traffic leaving between eight and nine and back at half past four. The crossing is 30 minutes. Sanur's own timetable carries the line that matters: the schedule can change at any time due to weather and crossing safety.

Boats stop leaving Sanur at about one in the afternoon. Take the earliest crossing, not the convenient one.
Boats stop leaving Sanur at about one in the afternoon. Take the earliest crossing, not the convenient one.

Take that seriously. In August 2025 a boat carrying 80 people capsized approaching Sanur on the return from Penida: two passengers died and 77 were rescued. Days later more than a hundred fast boat services were cancelled out of Sanur and Padangbai on a forecast of two to four metre waves, and the same happened in January 2026. Book the earliest crossing: the sea is calmer and the afternoon boats stay in reserve if yours is pulled. And never put Penida on the day before your flight home.

The day tour at ₹3,639 is the land version: Kelingking, the viewpoints, a car on roads worse than anything on Bali. Book it only if you will genuinely do the Kelingking steps, a steep scramble down and a harder climb back rather than a stroll. The four-spot snorkelling trip at ₹1,114 is the better day at a third of the price, because it keeps you on the water instead of in a van, and the manta cleaning station is the part of Penida that lives up to the photographs.

Nine o'clock: the gates open, and two of them are for children

Almost every paid attraction on Bali opens at nine and shuts at five, which gives you one usable block before the heat. Bali Zoo takes about three hours and stops check-in at four. Bali Safari keeps the same hours at a different scale, with a bus through open enclosures and a night version that runs later.

Bali Zoo at ₹758 is the cheapest thing here that will fill a morning, and with children under eight it is the one to take. Bali Safari at ₹4,511 is six times the price and earns it only with a full day and kids old enough to sit through a bus tour without melting.

Ten to noon: the last honest hours

Anything involving water, mud or an engine belongs in this window, because by one o'clock you will not want to. Tanjung Benoa is where the south sells parasailing, banana boats and jet skis off one strip of flat water, and the honest description is a well run activity park rather than an adventure. Go at nine or ten, before the coaches.

Tanjung Benoa at ₹482 is the best value morning in south Bali and fine for nervous beginners and children. The Telaga Waja raft at ₹1,233 is the pick if you want the river rather than the pool: it runs faster and steeper than the Ayung most operators sell, so take the Ayung if anyone is anxious about water. The Ubud quad bike at ₹2,060 is mud and noise and good fun, and the wrong booking for anyone who wanted scenery, because you will spend the hour watching the wheel in front of you.

Noon to four: stop booking things

These four hours are the part of the Bali day no itinerary should be spending. November is the hottest month on the island by average high, around 32 degrees, and the humidity does the rest. This is for a pool and a long lunch, and the people who refuse to believe it come home saying Bali was exhausting.

One o'clock on a village road. The shutters come down and stay down until about four.

If you insist on paying for something in the dead hours, pay for water you can stay in. Waterbom runs nine to six, which makes it the one attraction on the island built for the afternoon rather than wrecked by it.

Ours starts at ₹2,226, with a caution: the park's own adult day pass is listed at 630,000 rupiah, about ₹3,400, so check which ticket you are buying before you compare. Slots sell out too, which for a water park surprises people. Worth it with teenagers, hard to justify with toddlers.

Four o'clock: one hour of height

The late afternoon on the Bukit peninsula gets a sea breeze the rest of the island does not, and that is what the Timbis cliffs are for.

₹5,486₹4,572

Timbis paragliding at ₹4,572 is a tandem flight off a clifftop over the water in the best light of the day, and the most expensive single thing here. It is entirely weather dependent, so book it for your first spare afternoon rather than your last and you keep a second attempt if the wind is wrong. Skip it if you are only in it for the photographs.

Six o'clock sharp: two Kecaks, and they are not the same show

Both cliff-and-fire performances start at six, so you choose one. Uluwatu seats about 1,200 people in an open stone amphitheatre and routinely sells out before five. Tanah Lot runs six to seven and cancels in rain or on Balinese ceremonial days.

About 1,200 seats, and they are gone before five. Stone benches, and no roof over them.
About 1,200 seats, and they are gone before five. Stone benches, and no roof over them.

Uluwatu is the better hour of the two and the harder evening logistically. A hundred men chanting in a ring while the sun drops into the Indian Ocean behind them is hard to forget, and the seats are stone benches in the open, so a wet evening is a wet hour. The monkeys there take sunglasses and phones with real skill.

Uluwatu at ₹816 is the one to book, and book it rather than turning up. Tanah Lot at ₹482 is cheaper and quieter, and it is the right pick from Canggu or Seminyak because it saves the hour each way to the Bukit. Temple entry is separate at both: Tanah Lot charges foreign visitors 75,000 rupiah, around ₹405.

The money, the paperwork and the food

Visa on arrival is 500,000 rupiah, about ₹2,700, for 30 days, extendable once by another 30 for the same fee. In August the immigration directorate announced plans to raise this to 750,000 rupiah online and a million on arrival, with no effective date published, so check the official portal when you book. Apply for the e-VOA online anyway and walk past the payment queue.

The Bali tourist levy is 150,000 rupiah, roughly ₹810, paid once per trip through lovebali.baliprov.go.id and nowhere else, since paid lookalike sites exist. Under the governor's 2025 circular, attractions can refuse entry without the QR voucher. The All Indonesia arrival card is free, compulsory for every traveller including infants, and filed in the three days before you land at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id. Anything charging for it is not the government. Overstaying runs to a million rupiah a day, about ₹5,394, counted from the date stamped on arrival rather than the one on your ticket.

On the ground, 1,000 rupiah is about ₹5.40, or divide rupiah by 185. Non-stops run from Delhi on Air India and IndiGo, from Mumbai on IndiGo at 4.25am and from Bengaluru on IndiGo at 12.50am. Everywhere else connects.

If you are vegetarian or Jain, the word to learn is terasi, fermented shrimp paste. It is a base rather than a garnish, standard in sambal and the peanut sauce on gado-gado and routine in nasi goreng and mie goreng, so dishes that read as vegetarian usually are not. Saying no meat does not communicate this. The phrase is tanpa terasi. Two places take the question off the table: Ayodhya on Jalan Kartika Plaza in Kuta, pure vegetarian with Jain food in its own name, and Madhubann on Jalan Raya Ubud, which does a Jain thali and will cook without onion and garlic if you ask when you book. Seminyak has no pure veg Indian kitchen I can vouch for. Ubud is the easiest base on the island for a strict vegetarian family.

One booking solves the worst drive of the week.

₹3,451₹2,876

A private return car to Uluwatu and the Kecak at ₹2,876 costs more than the show itself, and on the one evening where arriving late means standing at the back of a 1,200 seat amphitheatre, that is the right way round. Book it from north of the airport, skip it if your hotel is on the Bukit.

Two last things. Renting a scooter legally needs an International Driving Permit valid for motorcycles, not the car-only category most people carry, and police checks run in Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Uluwatu and around Ubud. And Nyepi falls on Monday 8 March 2027: the airport shuts for 24 hours and hotel guests stay on the property. The Ogoh-Ogoh parades the evening before are worth planning around on purpose.

Bali does not reward covering ground or getting up late. It rewards picking the hour first and the place second.

Six bookings arranged around the clock will give you a better week than twelve arranged around a map. The hours before eight and after five are the ones you came for. Leave the middle of the day empty and spend it the way the island does.
