Dubai has five paid viewpoints. Two of them are worth the money.

Almost everything worth seeing in Dubai has a turnstile in front of it. There is no old quarter to wander for nothing, no cathedral, no ruins. What the city has instead is a catalogue, and the catalogue is priced in a way that has very little to do with what you get. You can pay ₹1,254 to look at Dubai from 150 metres up, or ₹15,752 to look at it from a helicopter, and both prices sit in the same brochure.

That is the thing to work out before you book anything. Dubai sells views, water, cold air and flowers, and in each of those categories it sells the same experience at three or four price points. Knowing which one earns its money is worth more than any packing list. Prices below are ours, in rupees, with the gate price in dirhams where it helps. The dirham is running at roughly ₹26 and has moved against us all year, so dirham figures on an older blog are worse now than they look.

The five paid viewpoints, and what each one shows

Burj Khalifa is the one everybody books first, and the ticket is fiddlier than the queue suggests. At The Top puts you on levels 124 and 125, with telescopes and an open-air terrace on 125. Slots are sold in thirty-minute intervals and cannot be cancelled or moved once bought, which matters if you are on the 4am flight out of Mumbai and have booked a 10am slot on your first morning. The level 148 upgrade buys a lounge, refreshments and a shorter wait. That is all it buys.

Go at sunset or do not go. Between roughly 6.30 and 7pm the city is lit twice over, once by the last of the sun and once by itself, and those slots cost more for a reason.

Of those three, Sky Views at ₹2,217 is where I would send a first-timer whose Burj slots are gone or whose face fell at the price. It is in the Address Sky View a few hundred metres away, the gate price starts at Dh65, and it has something the Burj does not: a glass slide down the outside of the building and a ledge walk around it. You are lower. You are also doing something instead of photographing something.

Which is the problem with all of them. From 124 floors up, Dubai is a grid of towers you already saw from the taxi, plus haze. Height on its own is not a view.

The Dubai Frame is the one with something to show you, and at ₹1,254 it is the cheapest viewpoint here. It is 150 metres tall and 93 metres wide, it stands at Gate 4 of Zabeel Park, and one gallery faces the old low-rise city while the other faces the towers. Gate price is Dh49 booked online. The sky deck has a smart-glass floor panel that switches from opaque to transparent under your feet, with solid floor alongside if that is not your idea of a good time. Allow ninety minutes. Open 9am to 9pm.

The View at The Palm is the other one I would pay for. It is a 360-degree deck on Palm Jumeirah, and it exists to show you a shape you cannot see from the ground: the fronds of the Palm laid out underneath you. Nothing else in the city sells you information you could not otherwise get. Take the monorail rather than a taxi. Gateway to Atlantis is Dh20 one way and Dh30 return, a day pass is Dh35, your nol card works on it, and the last train leaves at 9.45pm.

The fifth viewpoint is Ain Dubai, the observation wheel on Bluewaters. It shut in March 2022, stayed shut without explanation for most of two years, and reopened to the public at the end of December 2024 with tickets from Dh145. We do not sell it. Check it is turning on your dates before you build an evening around it.

The two views that are not from a building

The helicopter is the one real extravagance in the Dubai catalogue and the only thing on this list I would call unrepeatable. Twelve to fifteen minutes over the coast, the Palm and the Burj, at ₹15,752 a seat. That is a great deal of money for a quarter of an hour. It is also the only way to see the Palm and the World islands as the shapes somebody drew, and nobody who has done it talks about the price afterwards.

The Marina hour is the opposite sort of purchase. Cheap, pleasant, and it doubles as transport you would otherwise pay for: an hour on the water past Ain Dubai, JBR and the harbour for ₹2,514, which is less than two taxis across town.

Leave the thirty-minute jet ski to the Burj Al Arab at ₹7,225 unless a photograph of yourself in front of that hotel is worth ₹7,225. You cannot look at anything because you are steering, and the same money buys the Marina hour and the Frame with change.

October, and the season about to open

Dubai's outdoor attractions shut for the summer and come back one at a time in October, which is the biggest single thing to know about timing a trip from India. Dubai Miracle Garden opens its fifteenth season on 8 October. General admission is Dh100 for adults and Dh80 for children, under-3s free, and a combined ticket with Dubai Butterfly Garden next door is Dh140.

Go at opening or after five. October still averages a high of 35.9 degrees here and the garden has almost no shade, which is how a flower park ends up remembered as the worst afternoon of the holiday.

Global Village opens its 31st season on 14 October and runs to May 2027, at Dh25 from Sunday to Thursday and Dh30 on Friday and Saturday. We do not sell it and I am telling you about it anyway, because Dh25 for a whole evening is the best value in the emirate and nothing in our catalogue gets close.

Where to put a hot afternoon

Through October, and between noon and four for most of the rest of the year, the honest plan is to be indoors. Dubai is good at indoors.

The Green Planet at City Walk is an enclosed biodome holding about 3,000 plants and animals in five layers, from the flooded forest floor up to the canopy. Gate price is Dh155 for adults and Dh135 for children aged two to ten. Of the three below it is the one for children under ten, and an hour and a half covers it.

AYA Universe at WAFI Mall is twelve rooms of projection, light and sound. It is the pick if you are travelling with teenagers who will otherwise spend the afternoon face down in a phone.

Ski Dubai at the Mall of the Emirates is the most photographed and least necessary hour in the city, and it is still worth doing once with a child who has never seen snow. Passes include the jacket, trousers and boots, which is the part people worry about. Buy the Snow Park pass rather than the slope pass unless somebody in the group can genuinely ski. It runs to 11pm from Monday to Thursday and to midnight at weekends, so treat it as an evening rather than an afternoon.

Fish, and the several prices Dubai charges for them

The Dubai Aquarium inside Dubai Mall is the weakest value on this list at ₹5,188, for one reason. The enormous viewing panel everybody photographs sits inside the mall and costs nothing to stand in front of. The ticket buys the walk-through tunnel and the Underwater Zoo upstairs. Look at the panel for free first, then decide.

The Lost Chambers at Atlantis is the better aquarium and the cheaper one at ₹3,101, built into the hotel as flooded ruins, and it sits at the far end of the monorail you are already riding for The View at The Palm.

Aquaventure next door is a full day and a serious amount of money at ₹9,246. It is the right answer for a family with children between about eight and sixteen and the wrong one for everybody else. Go on a weekday.

The Dubai Dolphinarium at ₹1,080 is the cheapest thing in our catalogue and I would still leave it alone. Captive dolphin shows tend to be the purchase people quietly regret a week later.

The desert, and the one thing to say at pickup

The desert safari is the only item here that gets you out of the city. The evening version is the standard one: dune bashing, a camp, dinner, a drive back, ₹3,910.

Say at pickup if anybody in the car gets travel sick. Dune bashing is rougher than the photographs suggest, and most operators will drive that person to the camp by road instead of making them find out. Take a layer for after dark, because the desert gets cold quickly and nobody packing for Dubai believes that.

Does the pass pay?

The Go City Dubai All-Inclusive Pass covers 48 attractions, including At The Top, Ski Dubai, Aquaventure, the Lost Chambers, the Dubai Aquarium, a desert safari with dinner, IMG Worlds and Motiongate. It comes in 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 10-day versions, it is valid for a year from purchase, and the clock starts at your first attraction. Ours is listed from ₹36,316, so check which duration you are actually buying.

Then do the arithmetic. At our individual prices, At The Top, Aquaventure, Ski Dubai, the Lost Chambers, the Dubai Aquarium and a desert safari come to ₹32,115. You need a seventh paid attraction to get ahead, which means six or seven big-ticket days in a row with no beach day, no mall day and nobody in the group flagging. Families of four who plan like a military operation win on it. Couples on a five-night trip almost never do.

The part that is about you rather than the tickets

• Visa. Most Indian passport holders arrange a UAE e-visa before flying. The conditional 14-day visa on arrival, extendable once by another 14, applies only if you hold a valid US visit visa, a US Green Card, or an EU visit or residence visa. UK residence visas were taken off that list, with no start date published. A 60-day version has been discussed and is not in force. Check your own document rather than what worked for a cousin last year.
• When to go. Dubai averages a high of 35.9 degrees in October, 30.7 in November, 26.5 in December and 24.4 in January. December and January are the comfortable months and the expensive ones. Rain is about 95mm a year, nearly all of it between December and April, and it arrives as short heavy bursts that flood an underpass for an hour.
• Diwali. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with Dhanteras on the 6th and Bhai Dooj on the 10th. That five-day run is when fares from India peak and when every outdoor attraction is at its fullest. Guru Nanak Jayanti on Tuesday 24 November is the quieter long weekend, and November's average high of 30.7 is better weather than October's anyway.
• Getting around. The metro is the cheapest thing in Dubai. One zone is Dh3 on a Silver nol card, two adjacent zones Dh5, anything longer Dh7.50, with up to three transfers inside 180 minutes and children of five and under free. Street taxis start at Dh5 between 6am and 10pm and Dh5.50 overnight, then Dh2.26 a kilometre against a Dh12 minimum. Book through an app and the meter starts at Dh12 instead. From the airport it starts at Dh25.
• Food. Pure-vegetarian Indian restaurants are thick on the ground around Meena Bazaar, Bur Dubai and Karama, and a Jain order is understood in most of them without a conversation. Inside the paid attractions it falls apart. Theme parks, water parks and desert camps run on grilled meat, and the vegetarian option is usually a cheese sandwich. Eat properly before you go in.
• Money. The dirham is around ₹26. Miracle Garden publishes its prices before VAT and it is not the only one, so add 5% to dirham figures you read on an official site.

Dubai has no free version of itself. Every decision here is which ticket, not whether.

If you book one thing, book the Frame, and go on your first morning before you have seen the towers close up, because it is the only ticket that makes the rest of the city legible. If you book three, add a sunset slot at Burj Khalifa and the desert. Everything else here is a way of filling an afternoon too hot to spend outside, which is a real problem in October and a much smaller one by December.
