Dubai in July, without standing in the sun

Dubai in July is not a city you walk. It is 43 degrees by ten in the morning, the pavement is a hot plate, and the gap between an air-conditioned lobby and an air-conditioned taxi is the longest twenty metres of your day. Everybody knows this. Almost nobody plans around it.

So here is a day built the other way round — indoors when the sun is doing its worst, outdoors only when it has stopped.

Morning: go up, not out

The Burj Khalifa is the obvious move and it is obvious for a reason: the queue, the lift and the view are all indoors. What is not obvious is the hour. Sunset slots cost the most and sell first, and they put you on the observation deck with four hundred people holding phones. A late-morning slot costs less, is genuinely quiet, and the desert haze that everyone complains about is the thing worth looking at — a city stopping dead against sand.

Book the 124th floor unless you are certain you want 148. The extra hundred metres buys you height you cannot perceive and a lounge you will not use.

Midday: the hours to hide

Between noon and four, do not be outside. This is not advice, it is physics.

The Dubai Aquarium sits on the ground floor of Dubai Mall and holds ten million litres. You can see the viewing panel free from the walkway — what the ticket buys is the tunnel underneath and the Underwater Zoo above it, where the otters and the penguins are. Sand tiger sharks pass over your head. It is cold, dim and indoors, which in July is most of the point.

If you would rather be looking at ideas than fish, the Museum of the Future is twenty minutes away and is the rare building where the outside is the exhibit — a silver torus with Arabic calligraphy cut clean through its skin. The calligraphy is the windows. Two hours is enough.

Evening: the desert, finally

By five the heat breaks. This is when the desert is worth the drive, and when the evening safaris set off — dune driving while the light goes orange, a camp with dinner, back in the city by nine.

Two honest warnings. The dune driving is genuinely rough, and it is the one part worth skipping if anyone in your car gets motion sick — most operators will take you straight to camp instead if you ask. And take something warm. The temperature falls fast once the sun goes, and nobody packs a jacket for Dubai.

What this actually costs

A day like this — tower, aquarium, desert — comes to somewhere around twelve to fifteen thousand rupees a head, depending on how far into the desert you go and whether you take the 148th floor. The biggest single saving available to you is the one nobody takes: book the tower for late morning rather than sunset.

The desert is better at dusk. The tower is better before lunch. Getting those two the wrong way round is the most common way to spend more and enjoy it less.

Three things worth knowing

  • Everything is timed. The tower, the museum and the aquarium all issue slots, and arriving early does not get you in early.
  • The metro is excellent and irrelevant. It is clean, cheap and air-conditioned, and the walk to and from the stations in July will undo all three.
  • Fridays start late. Many places open after prayers. A Friday morning plan is a plan to stand outside a locked door.

None of this is a secret. It is just the order nobody puts it in.
