Phuket's monsoon has three weeks left to run. Fifteen bookings for the island, and five I would not make.

Phuket has about three weeks of rain left in it. October averages twenty-two wet days on the island, November is the last month of the southwest monsoon, and the dry weather you were promised really starts in December. Maya Bay reopened on 1 October after its annual August and September closure. The Similan and Surin islands open on 15 October and run until 15 May.

The flights land before the weather turns. SpiceJet starts Delhi and Mumbai to Phuket on 25 October and Thai Vietjet adds Mumbai on 26 October, which puts four carriers on the Mumbai route and three on Delhi: twenty-three nonstops a week from Mumbai, twenty-eight from Delhi, four hours forty each way. India is already Phuket's third-largest overseas market, with 393,277 arrivals in the first eight months of 2026, behind Russia and China.

Phuket's problem is not finding something to do. Every hotel desk sells a slightly different version of the same day at four different prices, and the cheap one is sometimes the better one. Fifteen bookings below, and five at the end I would leave alone.

The cheapest good day on the island

Three of Phuket's best sights are free. The Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill is 45 metres of white marble, open 6.30am to 6.30pm and best around five in the afternoon when the marble goes amber and the heat drops; shoulders and knees have to be covered, and there are sarongs at the gate if you turn up in shorts. Promthep Cape is the southern tip, busy for the last forty minutes of daylight. Phuket Old Town is Sino-Portuguese shophouses on Thalang Road, which closes to traffic on Sundays from 4pm to 9pm for the Lard Yai market, where most of the food is 30 to 80 baht.

What you pay for is the driving between them, which is the expensive part of Phuket.

₹3,307₹1,366

At ₹1,366 this is the best value in our Thailand catalogue. One van, four stops, no haggling with a tuk-tuk driver who wants 500 baht from Patong to Phuket Town. The catch is the schedule: it reaches Promthep on its own timetable, so if sunset at the cape is the point, do that separately in a Grab. If you go up to the Big Buddha alone, book your ride back before you climb. Drivers do not like coming up the hill empty.

Thalang Road in Phuket Old Town. The shophouses look best twenty minutes after rain, which in October is most evenings.

Three boats, and how much sea each one asks of you

What separates Phuket's island tours is the time you spend on a speedboat, and in October that matters more than where it drops you. Koh Khai is the shortest crossing, Phi Phi the longest. Maya Bay is open again 7am to 6pm on a 400 baht park fee, with 380 people on the sand at a time, about an hour ashore, and wading only to knee depth. James Bond Island sits inside Phang Nga Bay, the calmest water of the three when the swell is up.

Koh Khai at ₹2,030 is the one for anyone travelling with parents or small children, because you are never far from land. Phi Phi at ₹3,629 is the famous one and the one I would not book before November; a long speedboat day on a choppy Andaman is a long time to regret something. James Bond Island at ₹3,649 is the sensible monsoon choice: limestone cliffs, flat water, almost no chance of cancellation. Park fees at Phi Phi and the Similans are collected at the pier in cash, so carry 400 to 500 baht a head.

A red flag on a Phuket beach means the water is closed, not that it is risky. Two flags and the lifeguards clear the sand.
A red flag on a Phuket beach means the water is closed, not that it is risky. Two flags and the lifeguards clear the sand.

The west coast beaches are the part of Phuket that actually hurts people. Rip currents run from May to October, Patong is the worst because the shape of the bay funnels water back out, and Kamala, Karon and Kata are not much better. Waves hit 1.5 to 3 metres on a big swell day. If you get pulled out, swim parallel to the beach for 20 to 40 metres rather than straight back in. Nai Harn in the south is the gentlest beach and has the most dependable lifeguard cover.

The two days worth real money

Most Phuket day trips cost two to four thousand rupees and feel much the same. Two cost a lot more and are genuinely different.

Cheow Lan Lake at ₹8,438 is limestone towers coming straight out of green water inside Khao Sok national park, with a stop at the Samet Nangshe viewpoint. It is the longest day on this list by road, and worth it if you have four days on the island or more. On a three-day trip it eats a day you need elsewhere.

The Phang Nga bioluminescence trip at ₹13,089 is the most expensive thing we sell in Phuket and the only one that happens in the dark. Sea canoes through the limestone, then plankton that lights up where the paddle goes in. A bright moon washes the glow out, so ask the operator about the lunar calendar before you fix your date, and treat the plankton as a bonus rather than the thing you bought.

Elephants, where the expensive option is the right one

This is where Phuket's cheap tickets go wrong. Riding elephants is still legal in Thailand and still done with a bullhook. Bathing sessions, which sell as the kind alternative, put the same animals under the same control for the same hours. The venues accredited by World Animal Protection and Responsible Travel are the ones that allow no riding, no bathing and no touching at all. Our catalogue carries both kinds, and I would rather tell you which is which than sell you the cheaper one.

The Hidden Forest Elephant Reserve at ₹9,656 is the one to book. You watch from observation huts while the elephants graze where they want, nobody climbs on anything, nobody is handed a bucket, and lunch is vegetarian, which solves a second problem for a lot of Indian families. It costs three or four times what a bathing session does, and that gap is the difference between the two products.

Aquaria at ₹3,676 is under Central Phuket mall, which makes it the answer when the rain sits over Patong and nobody wants to leave the air conditioning. We sell the non-Thai resident ticket, so you are not arguing at the counter about ID.

The evening shows

We carry four of these and they are not interchangeable. One of them, Phuket FantaSea, puts live elephants on stage and takes your phone at the door, so it is not in the three below.

Carnival Magic at ₹5,243 is the biggest and loudest, and a lot of money for a long evening if your group is two adults.

Nine days in October when the island eats only vegetarian

From 10 to 18 October, Phuket runs the Vegetarian Festival, properly the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. The pole goes up on the evening of the 9th and comes down on the 19th. For nine days much of the island eats strictly jay: no meat, no eggs, no dairy, no onion or garlic. Hundreds of stalls open along Ranong Road under yellow flags with red lettering. It is free to attend, and for a vegetarian it is the easiest week of the year to eat anywhere on the island.

It is also not gentle. Processions leave the Jui Tui, Bang Neow, Kathu and Sam Kong shrines between 6am and 8am, the mediums have their cheeks pierced, and the crowd throws firecrackers in volumes that are hard to describe to anyone who has not stood in it. The biggest days are 16 October at Jui Tui and 17 October at Kathu, closing at Saphan Hin on the evening of the 18th. Wear white, bring earplugs, keep back from the front of a procession, and do not touch the mediums. With small children, watch one from a distance and then go.

If the noise is too much, take a day away from it.

The Krabi jungle day at ₹4,099 is hot springs, the Emerald Pool and Tiger Cave Temple, and it is quiet in a way Phuket is not during festival week. Two things to check: it is sold as a Krabi departure, so confirm whether pickup from your Phuket hotel is included, and the national park fee is not in the price, so keep cash for the gate.

Five I would not book

  • Phuket FantaSea, for the elephants on stage and the phone confiscation at the door.
  • Tiger Park, where the photograph is the product and a captive tiger is the prop.
  • Dolphins Bay, the same objection with a performing animal in a pool.
  • The rafting and ATV combo that finishes with elephant trekking. The rafting is fine. The trekking is riding, whatever the listing calls it.
  • Elephant bathing sessions, including ones sold as sanctuaries. If you are allowed to touch the animal, somebody is making it stand still.

Two of those get bought because somebody wanted an adrenaline afternoon and an animal was the only thing on the desk. There are better versions.

Hanuman World from ₹965 is the bigger operation, ziplines and skywalks through rainforest canopy, and the cheapest thing in our Thailand catalogue that fills a whole morning. The Erawan Patong Seaview zipline from ₹1,013 is shorter, closer to the Patong hotels, and the one to pick with ninety minutes and a nervous teenager. Both are from prices for the shortest package, so read the platform count before you pay, and both get slippery in heavy rain.

What an Indian passport needs this winter

  • Thirty days visa-free, not sixty. The entitlement was cut on 15 September 2026 and covers tourism only. One 30 day extension is possible at an immigration office for 1,900 baht, about ₹5,430.
  • The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is compulsory and free, and has to be filed within 72 hours of arrival. Do it before you leave for the airport.
  • Carry a passport with six months of validity, an onward ticket and your hotel booking.
  • The baht is around ₹2.86, so a 400 baht park fee is about ₹1,144 and the 100 baht airport Smart Bus about ₹286.
  • Use Grab or Bolt rather than street taxis. Airport to Patong is 800 to 1,000 baht in a fixed-fare taxi and 570 to 850 on an app. Patong to Kata is 400 to 600 on the street and 200 to 350 on an app. Tourist police are on 1155.
  • Pure vegetarian and Jain kitchens cluster in Patong, with Shree Ganesha, Chotivala and Shiv Sagar all near the main strip.
  • Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, the most expensive flying of the season out of India. The week after costs noticeably less for the same weather.
The island is cheap in the third week of October and expensive in the second week of November, and the weather between them differs by about four rainy afternoons.

Phuket in low season is a trade. You get the hotel rates and the short queues, and you pay in cancelled boats and closed beaches. It is a good trade if you book the sheltered water first, keep the open-sea days for the back half of the trip, and treat the red flags as the one rule here that is not negotiable.

Dates, fees and rules were read on 6 October 2026 from Phuket tourism figures reported by The Thaiger in September, flightsfrom.com route data for Mumbai and Delhi to Phuket, Thai immigration guidance on the 30 day exemption and the Digital Arrival Card, published Maya Bay and Similan park hours and fees, phuket101 on the Vegetarian Festival and the Sunday Walking Street, and local reporting on taxi fares and rip currents. The baht is taken at ₹2.86 and moves daily. Our prices are today's, so trust your voucher over this page.
