Your Thailand package routes you through Pattaya. Cutting it gives you back two days.

Almost every Thailand package sold out of India has the same shape. Land at Suvarnabhumi, straight into a coach to Pattaya, two nights, back to Bangkok for two more, Phuket bolted on if the budget stretches. It looks generous because it lists three cities.

Cut Pattaya. Everything it is sold to you for exists in Bangkok or off Phuket, closer to where you already sleep, and the two coach transfers are the worst days of the trip. What follows is eight days across two bases, with the bookings I would make and several I would not.

Cut Pattaya, keep the cabaret

Pattaya is 140 to 147 km from Bangkok by road: two hours in ordinary conditions, three or more at peak, each way. On a seven-night trip that is most of two days spent looking at an expressway, and you pay twice because the coach comes back.

What the leg delivers is a boat to Koh Larn, a cabaret, and Safari World, which is in Bangkok anyway. The cabaret is worth keeping, and Bangkok has its own. Calypso sits at Asiatique on the river, runs 75 minutes with no interval, and costs roughly 900 baht booked ahead against 1,200 at the door. Location matters here: several Pattaya package hotels are within walking distance of Walking Street, and this is not.

These are lip-synced costume revues with no nudity and nothing a child would find upsetting. The obstacle is a 70-minute sit at 7.30pm. Under about six is money wasted, and at Tiffany's a four-year-old pays full adult fare.

Calypso is the one I would book, on location alone. If a Pattaya night is already paid for, Alcazar is the better value and has a 5pm show, the only sensible slot with children. Tiffany's is the bigger production and charges for it, from 1,000 baht to 2,600.

Days one and two: let the river do the moving

Bangkok's evening rush moves at about 19 km/h. A taxi from the old town back to Sukhumvit at going-home time with tired children is a decision you make once. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun sit in one cluster no train line reaches, so the river is the answer rather than a novelty.

Do the three in that order, from opening. The Grand Palace is 500 baht, open 8.30am to 4.30pm, ticket office shut at 3.30. Wat Pho is 300 baht and free for children under 120 cm. Wat Arun is 200 baht, reached by the Tha Tien ferry for about 5 baht. Shoulders and knees covered at all three, children included; nobody has published an exemption for them.

The blue-flag tourist boat is the only express service on the Chao Phraya stopping at Wat Arun, which is its whole argument. Boats run every half hour or so from 8.30am and link the temples to the BTS at Saphan Taksin. It is a comfort purchase, not a saving: the orange-flag local boat covers most of the same piers for a flat 16 or 17 baht.

At ₹370 the boat is the best value in this piece. The guided palace tour at ₹9,708 earns its money in one case: a first trip where somebody else handling tickets, sarongs and lunch for five beats the difference. Doing it yourself costs about 1,000 baht a head in entries.

Days three and four: one out, one indoors

Damnoen Saduak has a documented reputation as a tourist trap. The working market it replaced closed in 1967; this one was built in 1981 around photogenic produce boats, prices are effectively fixed, and by 9am the waterways belong to tour groups. The Maeklong railway market bundled with it is the better half, where a train passes eight times a day and clears the awnings off the tracks.

Ayutthaya is the better day out. Eighty kilometres north, 90 minutes to two hours by train, and the historical park is free to walk. Temples are 50 baht each, cash only, and a 220-baht ticket covering six pays off only from the fourth onward. The honest limit with young children is three and a half to four hours of ruins: no shade, no playground, nothing interactive. Hire a tuk-tuk by the hour at the station and keep it, because the breeze between temples buys you the next one.

Ayutthaya at ₹2,439 is the one to book, on the earliest departure going. The market pairing at ₹2,327 is a seven to eight hour day for one good twenty minutes, worth it only if somebody wants the umbrella photograph. Kanchanaburi sells well at ₹11,746, which is too much day trip for a four-night stay.

Build the fourth day deliberately air-conditioned. SEA LIFE is under Siam Paragon at BTS Siam, open 10am to 8pm with last entry at seven, and 90 minutes is enough.

The combined ticket with Madame Tussauds at ₹353 costs less than the aquarium alone at ₹447. Both are listed so you can see that paying more buys less. The gate price runs to about 1,199 baht against 799 online, so book before you fly. Dream World at Rangsit is the bigger day for over-sixes, with a free shuttle from BTS Mo Chit exit 4.

What not to book, at any price

Safari World is on nearly every Indian package and should not be on yours. Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand and PETA Asia both document tiger posing, a performing elephant show and orangutans made to box in a ring. The park had 115 orangutans seized by wildlife police in 2004, one of the largest great-ape smuggling cases on record. ABTA classes elephant shows and unbarriered contact as unacceptable.

Skip tiger photo attractions entirely. Tigers there are often declawed or sedated, and cubs are taken from their mothers within days to keep the supply coming. The risk is not theoretical: an Indian tourist was mauled at Tiger Kingdom Phuket on 2 June 2025 while posing inside an enclosure, and in February 2026, 72 tigers died across its two Chiang Mai sites from mycoplasma and canine distemper in eleven days. One Phuket city tour in our catalogue includes a tiger stop, and I have left it out for that reason.

Elephants need the same scepticism, including at places with kind words in the name. World Animal Protection surveyed 236 Thai venues holding 2,849 elephants for a January 2026 report and found nearly two thirds kept in poor conditions. Riding appeared at 43 per cent of venues in 2024, down from 92 in 2010, but the number of elephants actually ridden fell only about 20 per cent, because the captive population grew by roughly 70. Bathing is the trap for well-meaning visitors: those elephants went through the same breaking, and ABTA rates it unacceptable alongside riding. The test is not the word sanctuary. It is whether riding, bathing, hugging or hand-feeding is offered at all.

The Hidden Forest morning session at ₹9,641 is the only elephant booking here, and it comes with homework rather than an endorsement. It prices like a low-volume operation, which is a good sign and not a guarantee. Ask before you pay whether it includes bathing or riding. If it does, cancel.

Days five and six: pick the water by your youngest child

Phuket is an hour and twenty to an hour and forty from Bangkok, with about 22 non-stop departures a day and low-cost one-ways under ₹2,000 booked ahead. Check which Bangkok airport you leave from: Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi are an hour apart in traffic.

Koh Khai is fifteen minutes by speedboat and the water is shallow and calm enough for small children to stand in. Speedboats queue in front of the beach from mid-morning, so the earliest departure is the whole trick. Phi Phi is the famous one and the one to be careful with: 45 to 60 minutes each way by speedboat, and experienced travellers on the Phuket forums advise against speedboat tours for under-tens, with one account of a boat going airborne off the swell and another of fractured vertebrae. Take the big ferry instead. Maya Bay also closes every year from 1 August to 30 September and allows wading only.

Phang Nga Bay is the calm-water middle path. The bay, the sea caves and the Koh Panyee floating village are the real content, because you get 20 to 30 minutes on James Bond Island and cannot swim there. It is also an eight to ten hour day door to door.

With a child under about eight, book Koh Khai at ₹2,038 and stop reading the other two. With children nine and up who do not mind a long day on a boat, Phang Nga at ₹3,642 gives better scenery and a gentler ride. Phi Phi, at the same ₹3,642, is worth it only from about ten upward and only in the dry months. Park fees of 400 baht an adult and 200 a child are usually inside the price, so ask.

Day seven: the island away from the beach

Big Buddha reopened on 3 March 2026 after a landslide closed it in August 2024, which most older guides still get wrong. It is free, open 9am to 6pm, with 94 steps up to the statue and sarongs lent at the entrance. Wat Chalong is also free and best before nine. Promthep Cape never closes, and you need to be there an hour before sunset to get a spot. Phuket Old Town takes three or four hours on foot, and its Thalang Road walking street runs Sundays, 4pm to 9pm.

At ₹1,365 this covers all four in one loop without the tiger stop the pricier version includes. Entry is free everywhere, so what you buy is the driving, and on an island where the good bits are 40 minutes apart that is fair. Do it on the last full day, when nobody wants another boat.

Eating vegetarian, and eating Jain

The useful word is jay, written เจ and printed in red on bright yellow flags outside stalls and shops. It is a Buddhist and Taoist vegan diet excluding meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey and alcohol, and also garlic, onion, shallot, chives and leek. That last clause puts it unusually close to Jain requirements, a happier accident than most Indian travellers expect. Learn one phrase, gin jay, and it does the work of five refusals.

What it does not cover is mangsawirat, the looser word for vegetarian, which may still include egg and fish sauce. Fish sauce is the default salt in Thai cooking, shrimp paste is a base ingredient in most pre-made curry pastes, and oyster sauce binds most stir-fries. So a vegetable green curry is not vegetarian, and neither is som tam or pad thai. Careful ordering at a general Thai restaurant is unreliable because the pastes are made in advance.

Phahurat is Bangkok's South Asian quarter, beside Chinatown and nearest to MRT Sam Yot. The Gurudwara Siri Guru Singh Sabha, built in 1932, serves free vegetarian langar daily on the second floor, worth knowing on a first evening with jet-lagged children. For sit-down Jain food, Saras on Sukhumvit Soi 20 and Saravana Bhavan on Soi 22 both list no-onion-no-garlic options; on Phuket, Shree Ganesha in Patong and Govinda's at Karon. Phone ahead if you need strict Jain rather than merely no onion and garlic, because the word gets used loosely.

If part of your group eats everything, this is the best evening in Bangkok, but it is a meat and seafood walk at ₹3,081 and a strict vegetarian will spend it watching. Send half the family and let the rest eat at Phahurat. The good stalls in Yaowarat are unmarked and they move, the one case where paying a guide beats a saved map pin.

The paperwork and the month

Your visa-free stay has been 30 days rather than 60 since 15 September, which we covered when it landed. Two parts catch families. Thailand asks proof of funds of 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 per family on visa-exempt entry, waived for children under 12. And the Digital Arrival Card is required for every traveller including infants, free, at tdac.immigration.go.th, within three days of arrival; one submission covers ten people. Paid look-alike sites rank well in search and all are selling a free form.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November, making the 6th to the 10th a long weekend and the sharpest fare spike of the season. Winter break runs roughly from the last week of December into the first week of January, though schools set their own dates and most have not published them. November to February is the dry window for Bangkok and the Andaman coast both, and when the sea off Phuket is calmest. Bangkok still averages about 27.7°C in December, which means mid-thirties by afternoon. Two dates to route around: the Grand Palace is expected closed from 14 to 19 December for a royal cremation, and Phuket's Vegetarian Festival runs 10 to 18 October, wonderful for jay food and confronting at the processions.

A three-city itinerary is not more generous than a two-city one. It is the same trip with the coach transfers left in.
